This painting started with a conversation on the subway.

I was sitting next to a woman I had never met before, and somehow we ended up talking about memory. She told me that some things never really leave us. They just stay somewhere inside until something brings them back. A song. A smell. A flower. And all of a sudden, you are not thinking about who you used to be; you are that version of yourself again.

I never saw her again, but something about that stayed with me.

While painting this piece, the flowers started feeling like memories growing out of her all at once. The darker ones felt heavier, like grief or old versions of ourselves we still carry. The clock came naturally too. Not really as a symbol, but more like the feeling that some people carry time inside their bodies.

This piece became the beginning of a new direction in my Inner Landscape series ; paintings that are less about resemblance and more about capturing what people hold inside.
